Waking up early we packed a few last minute things before heading out to wait for our car to the airport and the beginning of our Asian adventure. Departing for Logan at 6:45am meant dealing with the morning rush-hour traffic, but it was still light and we made good time. Check-in at the airport was a breeze, and we quickly made our way thorough security and on to the food court for breakfast. After our food, we hopped to the Admirals Club to relax in style while waiting for our flight. The Boston Admirals Club isn’t much to write home about (so I won’t), but has some comfy chairs and is quieter than the rest of the terminal. Soon it was time to make our way to the gate to board our first of three flights that on our way to Hanoi. Continue reading “Honeymoon Part 1: Boston to Hanoi”
For our honeymoon, K & I were cashing in the miles that I’d accumulated during my milage runs outlined Here, Here, Here, and Here, as well as those earned for traveling for work. All in all we had enough miles to get us to and from Asia in first class (traveling on OneWorld partners), so I started looking at options. After a decent amount of research we had settled on Hanoi and Bali. Now, that might seem like an odd choice, but we wanted to go someplace and do touristy stuff, and then go someplace to relax. Our 4 days in Hanoi would let us see some of the city (hit the highlights) and then 9 days in Bali (split between Ubud and Seminyak) would give us quite a lot of time to move at a slower pace. AA domestic first class hard product has gotten pretty good (especially compared to the legacy US first class. I mean come on, no power outlets at all?), but the soft is still lacking a little (mostly in the food), so I was still hoping to make the upgrade list. Before checking in for my flight I took a glance at the upgrade list and found it was 12-15 people long… Not a good sign. However, apparently this status thing is paying off since I jumped to first, and was able to clear along with two other people.
It was lunch time on the east coast when I arrived in Chicago, so I immediately headed for a torta from Tortas Frontera (one of Rick Bayless’ joints), and was not disappointed (though I never have been with any of the food I’ve had from there).
When traveling frequently one gets accustomed to many of the small annoyances that plague the entire process (the flight attendants who are less that courteous, or the ever shrinking pitch of the seats), but there are a few things that really stand out which I have a really hard time overlooking. I woke up early the next morning and headed out to a cafe ~10min from the hotel that was billed as a locals only type joint. Arriving I found the description to be true (I think they only had 1-2 english menus). Looking at the menu there were two breakfast combos (one noodle based, one not), and while I like noodles, the other combo (with eggs and sausage) was a little more appealing at the moment.
Again, most people will think I’m crazy (I know the K certainly does), but instead of spending easter weekend with family or friends, I decided to take a trip to Hong Kong.
I’ve already been told that I’m crazy for doing this by almost everyone I’ve spoken to, so I don’t expect many of you to understand, but I’ll build my defense and see if I can’t change some minds in the process.
