Hanoi & Ha Long Bay

Hanoi & Ha Long Bay

Day 3: A Whirlwind of Mopeds
Our Hanoi adventure started with a quick breakfast in the hotel restaurant. The options were varied, blending Vietnamese with western options (though those catered more to the Australian palate), and the service was friendly and welcoming. While at the table we also read through the Hanoi guidebook to figure out what we should do that day. The plan was to walk around the city, but our path had not been finalized. The book recommended several self-guided walking tours, and after reading a bit about them, we decided on one that would take us around the lake, around some other highlights, and end in one of the food markets. Honeymoon Part 1: Boston to Hanoi

Honeymoon Part 1: Boston to Hanoi

Waking up early we packed a few last minute things before heading out to wait for our car to the airport and the beginning of our Asian adventure. Departing for Logan at 6:45am meant dealing with the morning rush-hour traffic, but it was still light and we made good time. Check-in at the airport was a breeze, and we quickly made our way thorough security and on to the food court for breakfast. After our food, we hopped to the Admirals Club to relax in style while waiting for our flight. The Boston Admirals Club isn’t much to write home about (so I won’t), but has some comfy chairs and is quieter than the rest of the terminal. Soon it was time to make our way to the gate to board our first of three flights that on our way to Hanoi. Continue reading “Honeymoon Part 1: Boston to Hanoi”

Day 7: Lets do ALL the things!
The day started early with us heading down to breakfast and then right out to visit the Hagia Sophia. The previous day we had stopped at the front desk to check dressing requirements for visiting mosques since we’d seen conflicting info. The employee behind the desk said that we didn’t need anything special to visit the Blue Mosque, and that K didn’t need to cover her head (false) and we could wear shorts (also false), and that there were no issues with women showing bare shoulders (so much false!). We took his advice with cation and both wore jeans and K made sure she was dressed very modestly (basically avoiding anything with shoulder straps). Continue reading “Istanbul”

Day 6: All The Touristy Things!

Feeling much less cranky after a good nights rest, we started the day with coffee and pastries from the Starbucks downstairs before embarking on our walk to the Space Needle. The weather was somewhat overcast when we arrived, but luckily all the clouds were above the level of the observation deck, so we still had some nice views. The wind was a little too nippy for extended periods of outdoor viewing, but we walked our way around the inside of the observatory, stopping to both admire the panoramic views and the exhibits displayed inside. After seeing all that we could, we took the elevator down and wandered through the gift store (where we both picked up some souvenirs) before making our way to the next stop just a short walk away. The California Burrito: or how alcohol (likely) lead someone to put french fries inside a burrito

My second culinary discovery in San Diego went the opposite direction down the street of authenticity, and took a sharp turn towards late-night junk food. The California burrito is something that I had never heard of before lunch with a co-worker, I assumed that he was just sharing an opinion about how the burritos in Cali were better than those found elsewhere in the country. Flour vs. Corn: The Tortilla Dilema

I know this will sound blasphemous to many people, but I have never been a fan of corn tortillas.

There, I said it, I’ve just had a lot of experiences with sub-par, overly thick, slightly gummy but somehow dry tortillas, with little to no flavor. I’ve found that while flour tortillas don’t really add anything to a taco or burrito, they generally don’t detract from the dish as a whole. My philosophy has been that while a good corn tortilla is an amazing thing, a decent/subpar one has the ability to drag the whole dish down with it. Conversely, while a flour tortilla is never going to elevate a dish to perfection, it is much harder to screw up a flour tortilla to the point where it is going to make the dish worse.
